#TotalShutDown march to the Union Buildings

Kamogelo Seleka, Social Justice founder and programme director, led the #TotalShutDown intersectional women’s march against GBV to the Union Buildings on 1 August 2018.

The march formed part of a countrywide initiative aimed at protesting against GBV, and demanding greater acountability from government. Similar marches were staged in other centres. The organisers also called on women and gender non-conforming people all over the country to stay away from work.

Participants in the Gauteng march gathered at the old Putco depot in Marabastad and then proceeded to the Union Buildings, where they handed over a memorandum containing 24 specific demands addressed to President Cyril Ramaphosa. Some marchers held pictures of women who had lost their lives at the hands of their partners.
