Response to Covid-19

In June 2020, in response to Covid-19, we distributed parcels containing blankets, masks and sanitizers, baby and adult diapers, and prepaid electricity vouchers to some 200 needy people in Dobsonville, Soweto. Reusable pads for disadvantaged learners

  On 31 October 2019, we donated reusable sanitary pads to more than 1 500 disadvantaged learners at Raymond Mhlaba Secondary School in the informal settlement of Tshepisong.  The event was sponsored by Hatch Engineers and Palesa Pads.

GBVF community awareness event

In September 2019, we organised a GBVF community awareness event in the Tshepisong Community Hall, in collaboration with the metro councillor for Ward 129. This project aimed to raise awareness on GBVF. The speakers included the current speaker of the Johannesburg Metro Council, Ms Nonceba Molwele.

Visit to mothers with children in prison

In July 2019, we participated in a visit to mothers with children born in prison in a Johannesburg correctional facility. The project was initiated by I Am My Sisters’ Keeper, a sister organisation. We presented mothers and children with care packs and baby essentials, purchased with the assistance of activists and others.

Community outreach in Ward 129, Dobsonville

In June 2019, we participated in a community outreach event in Ward 129, Tshepisong, sponsored by Build-It, Assupol and Johannesburg Water. Activities included soccer and netball tournaments, aimed at keeping youths off the streets and away from drug abuse.

Winter blanket drive 2019

In June 2019, we initiated a Winter Blanket Drive for various beneficiaries in Dobsonville, Soweto. It was supported by the Frida Hartley Shelter in Yeoville, Johannesburg, managed by Cheryl Hlabane. The beneficiaries were victims of GBV, single women, members of child-headed households, and persons living with disabilities.

Africa Day 2019

On 18 May 2019, Africa Day, we participated in a Celebrate Survivors of Human Trafficking event in Sandton, organised by the Coalition Against Human Trafficking (CAHT) and the Nigerian Embassy. The participants included the Dobsonville Human Rights Office.
